Whole Room Refresh - Walk with SL as We Decorate a Bedroom Step-by-Step
Introduction to Whole Room Refresh Decorating Services
Hi there! I’m Jill, the decorator behind Staged for Living, and I’m here to walk you through a master bedroom whole room refresh.
My Whole Room Refresh service is perfect if you want a space that feels new, cozy, and totally you—without all the stress.
First, I’ll ask you to fill out a short questionnaire and hop on a quick call with me. This is where I get to hear all about your room and what you’re hoping for. Then, we’ll look at some moodboards you create —these are fun picture collections that help me see what styles and colors you love. From there, I’ll take care of the rest!
Join me as we refresh this master bedroom with ease and organization using SL’s step-by-step process.
Questionnaire and Discovery Call - Tell SL About Your Project
Before I start designing, I want to learn all about your space! I’ll send you a quick questionnaire that asks simple questions—like what the room is used for, what you like or don’t like about it now, and what your dream space looks like.
Then we’ll schedule a short discovery call. This is just a friendly chat where I can ask a few more questions and really understand your style and needs. It also gives you a chance to ask me anything. This step helps me make sure your new room feels just right for you!
Moodboards - Show SL What Decor You Love
Moodboards are one of my favorite tools! They’re picture collages that shows the styles, colors, and items you love. When you share a moodboard with me, it helps me see exactly what you're drawn to.
For example, this client’s Pinterest moodboard showed me she loved soft pink, natural textures, and updated lighting. She also wanted to include a special reading area and some upholstered furniture. All of that gave me a great starting point to design a room that felt personal and peaceful—just like she imagined.

Design Consultation - Let SL See Your Space
At our first consultation, I visited my client’s home to take a good look at the space. I snapped a few photos and made notes about the permanent features she wanted to keep—like the wall color, carpet, and doorknobs. I also took measurements so I could plan everything just right.
We talked about what she loved and what she was ready to let go of. This helped me figure out what to keep, what to declutter, and how to make the room feel fresh without starting from scratch.
What she loved:
wood furniture but wants it painted
desk
mirror
lamps but would change color if needed
wall paint color
door paint color
What she wanted to replace or add:
end of bed bench
bed
art
ceiling fan
curtains
throw pillows
bedding
couch
rug under couch
These farmhouse dressers will get a makeover sooooon! So will the windows, bed, and couch.
Color Palette - Let’s Find a Color Scheme for Your Room
For this bedroom, we went with a beautiful jewel-toned color palette. The connected bathroom (and most of the home) was already decorated, and she loved the rug in there—so we pulled colors from that and the rest of the home to keep everything feeling connected.
Since the room already had warm elements like bronze door knobs and tan carpet, a rich, warm palette was the perfect fit. These tones help the space feel cozy, inviting, and full of personality—just like her!
Jewel tones for the win!
No one LOVES carpet, but sometimes you make do with what you have!
Floorplan - We Find the Best Layout for Your Furniture
We arranged the furniture to make the room feel both beautiful and easy to move through. At first, she wasn’t sure about placing the bed in front of the windows—but once we tried it, she saw how the windows created a stunning backdrop.
Now, when you walk into the room, your eye goes straight to the most beautiful parts: the bed and the cozy little couch. It feels welcoming, peaceful, and perfectly balanced.
Floor plans allow you to move furniture without straining your back! We also love these windows!
Upholstered Furniture - SL Helps you Chose the Perfect Fabrics
We found a lovely, budget-friendly sofa to replace the charcoal gray one she had before. The new piece fits beautifully with the warm color palette and helps the whole room feel softer and more pulled together.
We also replaced the client’s charcoal bed with a creamy tan upholstered platform which she loves!
Non-upholstered Furniture - Let’s Add Work Horses to Your Design
She wanted to keep her existing wood furniture, but the cool white color and farmhouse style didn’t quite match the new look she was going for. To warm things up, we chose a deeper, creamy white from Sherwin-Williams and gave the dressers a fresh coat of not-distressed paint. For the distressed black farmhouse nightstands, we painted a rich brown satin that added contrast and tied in beautifully with the rest of the room’s warm palette. We also added a new, rustic bench to the foot of the bed.
Non-Upholstered furniture needed:
coffee table
side table
bench for foot of bed
To paint:
dressers
nightstands
All these neutral paint colors work well with our palette and each other. It’s best to try to keep the more expensive pieces a neutral color so they last for years to come!
Accent Fabrics - Let’s Have Fun with Fabric and Pattern
We decided to have a little fun with the accent fabrics! Patterned curtains and a fresh, vivid rug added color and personality to the room, while plenty of neutral pieces helped keep the overall look calm and balanced. It was the perfect mix of playful and peaceful.
Accent fabrics needed:
curtains
rug
bedding
quilt and shams
comforter
sheet sets - 2
blanket
decorative throw pillow covers - 3
inserts - 3
sofa
throw pillow covers - 3
throw pillow inserts - 3
blanket
Playing with color, texture, and pattern is so enjoyable and keeps the look interesting!
Accessories, Plants, and Lighting - The Jewelry of Your Room
Accessories are the finishing touches that bring the room to life—like artwork for the walls, little décor pieces for shelves and surfaces, and all the fun details that show off our client’s personality. These final layers helped the space feel complete, cozy, and uniquely hers.
Accessories needed:
coffee table accessories
side table accessories
nightstand accessories
dresser accessories
desk accessories
bookshelf accessories
pictures for over couch, by dresser, and over desk
Remember useful items, as well, such as coasters and decorative boxes for storage. Below are some of the accessories we considered.
Antique stores and estate sales have wonderful, high end looks for less. Both of these vintage paintings are hand painted originals.
We also added a couple of plants to bring in some organics and texture and swapped out the old ceiling fan for a more modern style that fit the room’s updated look. Then we added a lamp by the couch and painted the two nightstand lamps a neutral beige color with a stone texture. Just those changes made a big difference in the overall feel of the space!
Install Day - It’s Time to Set Up and Decorate
Install day is always so much fun (my favorite!) —it’s when everything comes together! After all the planning, shopping, and prep, this is the moment the room truly transforms. At Staged for Living, we handle it all for you so you can simply walk in and enjoy the finished space.
Take a look at the after photos below to see how it all turned out!
Natural Choice paint by Sherwin-Williams along with new knobs look great on this dresser. Notice the jewelry stand and necklace hooks - cute and useful.
Love this extra-large tapestry from Etsy! The colors play so nicely with the rug! I found these darling candle sconces at an antique store in Fort Worth, TX.
These pink Anthropologie pillows add a little sweetness to the sofa. And that SL Home tapestry pillow! Chef’s kiss! We also love a great coffee table book with some quirky die decor!
Love the Mudslide by Sherwin-Williams paint showcased on these nightstands! And the Amazon gold knobs! Perfection. The minimal look on nightstands is also where it’s at! Leave room for books and drinks. :)
Love texture? Pattern? Then this combo is for you! Not matchy-matchy but coordinated. Amazon + Pottery Barn panels on all five windows. Mixing high and low is always a win.
